Things to remember

Please remember to bring all applicable tax documents. Here’s a list to get you started.

Required Documents:

  • All T4 (statement of Remuneration Paid) slips: get these slips from your 2009 Employer(s)
  • All T2202A forms: tuition receipts that can be downloaded from ROSI. If you did not file T2202A for Tuition and Education for prior years, an adjustment must be filed for that tax year. Bring in the previous year’s documentation.
  • All 2009 T4A slips:the forms you receive for any scholarships, bursaries or research grants
  • Summary of gratuities earned
  • 2009 All T5 (Statement of Investment Income) slips relating to interest earned
  • 2009 All T4RSP (Statement of RRSP Income) slips: these slips are sent if you have cashed out any portion of your RRSP
  • 2009 Notice of Assessment/Reassessment: this is the form to bring if you have carried forward tuition credits from past years. You will have received this in the mail last year

Optional Documents: You need to remember the amount for these items for YorkU Tax Clinic to properly file your tax returns. Although you are not required to bring in these documentations, CRA may audit your file at any time and require that you present the document(s) to them.

  • Rent receipts: all 2009 rent receipts from residences or off-campus housing. Proof of rent can include a letter from the landlord, a receipt, or your cancelled cheques. A lease is not a valid proof of payment.
  • Charitable Donations: bring in any receipts for charitable donations or donations to political parties made from January 1, 2000 until December 31, 2009, that you wish to claim on your 2008 taxes
  • 2009 Transit Passes: You may be eligible for tax benefits if you purchased Canadian transit pass(es) that entitled you to unlimited transit at some point during 2009. Please bring in these expired passes to claim tax benefits.
  • Residency: if you have not been a resident of Canada since January 1, 2008, please bring documentation showing when you first landed in Canada. Your tax return must specify the number of days you have been in Canada.
